WALK THE LINE

Picture
United States, 2005. Drama/Musical. A close look inside the life of music icon Johnny Cash (played to perfection by Joaquin Phoenix, who won a Golden Globe for Outstanding Actor in a Musical/Comedy his performance). The movie does a wonderful job at depicting the many obstacles and inner demons Cash had to contend with while at the height of his career. Of course, the central part of the movie revolves around the love story between Cash and June Carter, an established country artist (played  by Reese Witherspoon, who won a Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy Academy Award for this role), whom he would eventually marry and make his second wife. MY FAVORITE: Witherspoon and Phoenix's chemistry is undeniable.

CRAZY HEART

Picture
United States, 2009. Drama/Musical. Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges), a washed up country artist at the apparent end of his career, has become a has-been, left in the shadow of his one-time protégé Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell). While on tour, in his beat up Chevy Suburban, he falls for young small-town reporter Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal). An alcoholic with serious money problems, Bad regains his "raison-d'être" after getting involved with the young woman and becoming intertwined in her and her young son's lives. Unfortunately, Bad's damaging habits lead to unfortunate incident that will change his life and others' lives forever. Can Bad redeem himself? MY FAVORITE: The music in this film is beautiful. Bad's country songs left me wanting for more. Jeff Bridges and (gasp!) Colin Farrell lend strong vocals to their strong performances.

THE HANGOVER

Picture
United States, 2009. A trashed hotel room, a tiger, a baby, a stripper and someone's grandmother's holocaust ring.  Those are some of the highlights of the Hangover. This movie is about 4 guys' (badass teacher Phil, whipped boyfriend Stu, weird hairy Allan and soon-to-be groom Doug) journey to Sin City to celebrate Doug's last night as a bachelor. After a wild night no one can remember and Doug's sudden disappearance, the gang must go on a search for him in order to get back in time for the wedding. After coming across many hurdles and obstacles (one more hilarious than the other), the guys are racing the clock to save their friend, who they believe to be in the custody of an Asian gangster, Mr. Chow. Will Doug make it to the altar on time? Why can't the guys remember that infamous night? Watch The Hangover to find out. It's really worth it, I almost peed myself watching it (even the second time). MY FAVORITE THING: Melissa, Stu's domineering adulterous girlfriend. Girl's a bitch! Also at the top of my list, Gangsta Leslie Chow's Chinese balls.

CHICAGO

Roxie Hart (played by Renee Zellweger , an unhappy housewife, shoots her lover in the heat of passion and becomes an overnight sensation. After being arrested, Roxie is taken to the Cook County Jail, where she is entrusted to the corrup "Mama" Morton (Queen Latifah). With the help of her loyal and cuckold husband (played by John C. Reilly), who enlists the help of defense lawyer extraordinarie Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), who is also representing Roxie's idol Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) in a similar matter. Jealousy and rivalry ensues between the two "merry murderesses" who will do anything to keep their names in the paper. This movie showcases outstanding performances by all of the actors, meriting Zellweger a Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy Oscar, while Reilly and Zeta-Jones took home the statuette for Supporting Actor/Actress Musical/Comedy. MY FAVORITE: The Cell Block Tango.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

Picture
United States, 2006. Comedy. Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) gets the job "a million girls would kill for", working for Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of super fashion magazine "Mode". Andy soon finds out she might be in over her head when she meets Miranda's first assistant (Andy being the "second") Emily (played by Emily Blunt) and has an opportunity to witness Miranda's "Dragon Lady" antics. Things get more complicated when Andy manages to impress Miranda with her work ethic (and strong immune system). Will Andy, a serious journalist at heart, sell her soul to the Devilish Miranda? MY FAVORITE THING: Andy's transformation sequence from "Plain Jane" to "Super Glam". The wardobe was amazing on this film!

LEGALLY BLONDE

Picture
United States, 2001. When Elle Woods' (Reese Witherspoon) boyfriend Warner dumps her for not being "serious" enough, she decides to teach him what she's made of by following him to Harvard Law School. Elle's rocky start at Law School is cushioned by her chance encounter with Emmet (Luke Wilson), an assistant professor at Harvard and her newfound friendship with dimwitted-UPS guy obsessed- manicurist Paulette (a delectable Jennifer Coolidge). Once Elle gets accustomed to the demands of her new lifestyle, she manages to thrive, even getting a coveted internship with famed Professor Callahan (Victor Garber), alongside her ex-beau Warner and his fiancé, mousy Vivian Kensington (Selma Blair). Will Elle brains triumph over her looks? Will Warren regret his choice? Will Paulette get her man? MY FAVORITE THING: The "bend-and-snap" and Elle grilling Chutney's (Linda Cardellini) bad perm on the stand.
